Progress of the Restoration on Hawker Hurricane AM274 in 2009 ~ page : 1

Close up view of the new spar liner/tube encased in the double-layer polygonal spar caps. John has chosen to prime the inside of the spar tube as well as the exterior. Although this move is NOT authentic to any original Hawker Hurricane, it does not take away from the authenticity of the aircraft, and will help preserve the tube for many more years than simply priming the exterior of the tube/liner.

An original AM274 center section stiffener with oil tank mount has been cleaned, inspected, painted with primer, and is now sitting in place on the new front, center section spar web.Another stiffener can be seen at the top of the photograph. The clamp at the right is holding the polygonal spar cap on the spar web until John can get it riveted in place.

Some of the original center section web stiffeners off the Hawker Hurricane AM274 are now cleaned, inspected, primed and set in place on the new, replacement front center section web.

The front center section spar is now positioned in the center section jig in order to check the fit.

The next step will be riveting the polygonal spar caps to the new web, followed by riveting the stiffeners to the new web.

By the end of January 2009, both the front and the rear center section spars have been re-built using new webs, the new heat-treated spar-liners and double-layer polygonal spar caps that John made, and the original center section stiffeners and mounts off AM274. Both spars are now positioned in the jig, ready to be riveted together!
John has cut the new front, center section the new, heat-treated spar tube and double-layer, polygonal spar caps to the web. They are clamped here and ready for placing in the center section jig. The original stiffeners and mounts have been cleaned, inspected, painted with primer and are now set in place, ready to be riveted on.
